Rook

Bi Characters

Rook, the customizable protagonist of Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024), offers players a uniquely personal journey in the Dragon Age universe. For the first time, players can choose not only Rook’s sex but also their gender identity, including the option to play as a transgender character. Additionally, players can choose for Rook to “come out” as a different gender at any point in the story, allowing for an exploration of identity that is both fluid and deeply integrated into the game’s narrative.

In Veilguard, Rook’s customization extends beyond gender. Players can select Rook’s race (human, dwarf, elf, or Qunari) and class (mage, rogue, or warrior), as well as choose from one of six factions: the Grey Wardens, Antivan Crows, Mourn Watch, Lords of Fortune, Veil Jumpers, or Shadow Dragons. Each faction shapes Rook’s backstory, dialogue options, and alliances, adding a layer of replayability and unique interactions that reflect the chosen affiliation. While the player can select Rook’s first name, the character’s surname changes based on the chosen faction, and “Rook” itself is an affectionate nickname given by Varric, a beloved character who has appeared in all four Dragon Age games.

Rook’s romantic path is equally flexible. Players can choose to pursue relationships with characters regardless of their sex or gender identity, allowing Rook to be gay, straight, or pan/bisexual, based on player choice. This design underscores the game’s commitment to LGBT inclusivity, providing players with the freedom to create a protagonist that truly aligns with their own preferences and identity.

Rook’s character, alongside Emmrich’sBellara Lutarte, Neve Gallus, Lace Harding, Lucanis Dellamorte, Davrin, and Taash add depth to Veilguard’s inclusive cast, exemplifying a broader spectrum of attraction and reinforcing the Dragon Age series’s commitment to rich, varied LGBT representation.
