Emmrich Volkarin

Bi Characters

Image/Electronic Arts

Emmrich Volkarin is a human necromancer and an eccentric professor hailing from the Mourne Watch, an organization dedicated to the study and control of dangerous magical forces. Emmrich brings an air of mystery and dark humor to Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024), thanks in part to his morbid fascination with the undead. As a character inspired by gothic horror icon Vincent Price, Emmrich’s personality and dramatic flair make him one of the most charismatic and memorable figures in the game. His undead butler, Manfred, serves as a comedic foil, adding a touch of dark levity to his storyline.

Emmrich’s dedication to necromancy and his deep knowledge of the arcane arts make him an invaluable ally in Rook’s quest, but his unorthodox methods sometimes raise eyebrows among his companions. His approach to magic reflects an ethically complex side that contrasts with the more traditional views of the Mourne Watch, adding layers to his character and hinting at a history filled with intriguing secrets. Emmrich’s witty banter and morbid outlook create a fascinating dynamic within the team, providing a different perspective on the forces at play.

In terms of representation, Emmrich is one of the game’s eight pan/bisexual characters, romanceable by the player character regardless of their sex or gender identity. His pan/bisexuality is woven into his flirtatious interactions, which reflect his adventurous and open-minded approach to relationships. Emmrich’s character, alongside Bellara Lutarte, Neve Gallus, Lace Harding, Lucanis Dellamorte, Davrin, Taash, and Rook, adds depth to Veilguard’s inclusive cast, exemplifying a broader spectrum of attraction and reinforcing the Dragon Age series’s commitment to rich, varied LGBT representation.
