The Brooklyn Brujas trilogy by Zoraida Córdova is a YA fantasy series about a family of witches (brujas) living in Brooklyn. Each book follows one of three magical sisters as she comes to terms with her powers, confronts her family’s complicated history, and navigates the politics of magic users across the greater Tri-State area.

The first book, Labyrinth Lost (2016), centers on middle sister Alejandra Mortiz, aka Alex, who is coming into her powers. Alex doesn’t want to be a bruja, but she happens to be one of the most powerful the family has ever seen. When the time comes to accept her magic and the blessing of her ancestors, she instead rejects it, accidentally banishing her entire family to Los Lagos, a dark, mythical realm filled with dangerous creatures and magic.

To rescue them, Alex teams up with the mysterious brujo Nova and her best friend Rishi. A tender love triangle develops between the three, with Alex openly attracted to both Nova and Rishi. Importantly, none of the conflict centers on her bisexuality, Alex is confident in who she is, and her family is completely accepting of her attraction to women.

The next two books shift focus to Alex’s sisters, Lula, the older, and Rose, the younger, each facing her own magical and emotional challenges. Alex continues to appear throughout the trilogy, remaining assured in her sexuality and supported by her family. The drama, as always, comes from the supernatural: the undead, world domination, and uncontrollable magic—not from identity or acceptance.
