Alejandra (Alex) Mortiz is the main character of the YA fantasy novel Labyrinth Lost, the first book of the Brooklyn Brujas trilogy by Zoraida Cordóva. Alex comes from a long line of powerful brujas and brujos, but she’s reluctant to accept her magical birthright. As her Deathday approaches, Alex learns that she is an encantrix, an exceptionally powerful bruja, which only increases the pressure to embrace her magic.
When a mysterious young brujo named Nova tells her she can reject her powers during the Deathday ritual, Alex decides to go through with it. But everything goes wrong. In rejecting her powers, Alex unknowingly banishes her entire family to the dark underworld of Los Lagos, a realm filled with creatures and spirits drawn from Latin American mythology. To rescue them, Alex must journey through this treacherous land and confront both external dangers and her own fears.
Along the way, Nova’s hidden motives begin to surface, even as real feelings develop between them. Then Rishi, Alex’s best friend, joins the quest—and their deepening bond sparks a love triangle.
Alex is torn between Nova and Rishi, between what each represents, while fighting to save her family. Despite the chaos, her bisexuality is never treated as a source of conflict. Alex is confident in her attractions and takes in stride the realization that her feelings for Rishi may be more than friendship, while still acknowledging her attraction to Nova.
The story continues in later books, with Alex’s family fully accepting her and her relationship with Rishi, both of whom remain central throughout the trilogy.
