Gabriel Piña
Bi CharactersGabriel “Gabo/Gabi/Chivo” Piña is the protagonist of Jonny Garza Villa’s novel Futbolista. He is eighteen years old, an only child, and lives in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is a first-semester student at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where he plays as the starting goalkeeper for the Islanders, the university team. Despite being shorter than most goalkeepers, he stands out for his intensity, discipline, and work ethic — qualities that have allowed him to build a solid record since high school and begin his college career as one of the team’s most promising players.
Since the age of four, Gabi has had a clear dream: to become a professional soccer player and one day play in a World Cup with the Mexican national team. On the field, he is known for his competitive mindset, obsessive focus on improvement, and strong leadership. Off the field, he is equally intense in his relationships: he describes himself as someone who prefers deep emotional bonds over casual encounters, and he tends to fall in love quickly and wholeheartedly.
Academically, he plans to pursue a master’s degree in mathematics. At the beginning of the story, Piña identifies himself as an ally of the LGBT community due to his queer and non-binary friends. However, he admits to often avoiding confrontations or conflicts surrounding these issues.
Gabi grew up in a working-class household, with his mother employed at a daycare and his father in construction, where money was always limited. From a young age, he helped his father during the summers to afford soccer camps, uniforms, and school expenses.
Throughout the novel, we witness his process of self-discovery, especially as he faces feelings that challenge his previous idea of himself, his place in soccer, and the cultural expectations weighing on him as a young Mexican and high-performance athlete.
