Jim Jimenez is one of the biggest supporting characters on the HBO pirate romantic comedy, Our Flag Means Death (2022-). They are portrayed by Vico Ortiz. Mysterious at first (as they disguised themselves as a man to gain passage on the ship), Jim is one of the most capable but deadly members of the pirate ship the Revenge. At first standoffish, they eventually warm up to and befriend most members of the crew, becoming closest with Oluwande (Samson Kayo). In the first season, they are often seen in bland, androgynous-to-classically-male-leaning clothing, often with a hat to hide their features. In the second season, they are most often seen in garb similar to Blackbeard’s — leather, tattoos, and smudged black makeup, but now with short hair.

While originally sneaking into the crew on Stede Bonnet’s the Revenge disguised as a man, they eventually reveal that they do not feel like either a man or a woman but insist on still being referred to as Jim and for nobody to treat them any differently.

In the first season, Jim enjoys a tender friends-to-lovers romance with fellow crewmate Oluwande. When they are forced to follow different captains at the end of the season, Jim eventually becomes involved with new crewmate Archie (Madeleine Sami). When all three end up on a reunited crew together, there is no bad blood but instead celebrations for their respective relationships that evolved over the course of the two seasons.

Jim stands as one of the most fascinating and heartwarming explorations of bisexuality in the entire show (which is saying something for an ensemble of characters that is more often than not queer). From the authentic portrayal of a nonbinary queer character of color being played by a nonbinary person of color to the acceptance of Jim’s gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as the joyful support of friends and former lovers, Jim’s narrative stands as a wonderful example of how a queer character in a period comedy can grow and develop without conforming to the typical tropes often associated with these genres.
