Archie is a supporting character who comes aboard the Revenge in the second season of the HBO pirate comedy, Our Flag Means Death (2022-). While she has conversations with many of the supporting players, her main relationship is with Jim. A typical outfit for her is similar to that of Blackbeard’s — lots of leather, tattoos, and smudged black facial makeup. She also has long black hair which is usually slicked back. Archie is an experienced but surprisingly cheerful pirate, often citing horrors of her past experience as well as the first time she has experienced common occurrences in our modern world (like apologies).

In the second season, she refers to male lovers of her past. She becomes attracted to and starts a relationship with Jim, a nonbinary crewmate. She admires their sense of hope as well as the way they tell children’s stories to calm fellow crewmates to calm them after traumatic raids. While she has seen some great horrors in her time as a freelance pirate, she maintains an optimistic attitude about it, and eventually how things can go better for her and the rest of the crew (with the help of Jim).

What further distinguishes Archie is her shared acceptance with Jim of their former lover, Oluwande, fostering another friendship aboard the Revenge. While there is no polyamorous setup between the three characters, there is kinship and joy in their brief scenes together.

While there are more overt examples of bi pirates in Our Flag Means Death, Archie serves as a warm reminder that kind but casually queer characters have a place in this type of narrative.
