Ed Teach — better known as Blackbeard — is one of the main characters in the HBO pirate romantic comedy series, Our Flag Means Death (2022-). He is portrayed by Taika Waititi, who also serves as an executive producer and occasional director on the series. At first a mentor to the other main character, the Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet, the two eventually become romantically involved, and antics ensue. Blackbeard is most often seen all in leather and boots (but with one sleeve missing), a lot of tattoos, and long salt-and-pepper hair. In the first season, he brandishes a long black-and-grey beard. In the second season, the beard is much shorter, and the pirate also starts donning more smudged black makeup around his eyes — especially during his reign of terror post-breakup.
Ed is a merciless pirate who finds himself intrigued when he hears of the bumbling success of Stede. While in his past Ed has been a merciless killer and mercenary on the high seas, he is not incapable of change and growth through his relationship with Stede. However, during his post-breakup rage and before his near-death experience, Blackbeard deals out a lot of terror and death in his wake.
Historically, Teach had many wives, but OFMD focuses mostly on the bi relationship that springs up between him and Stede. We learn in the first season this is not his first time in homoerotic affairs, as Calico Jack alludes to some dalliances he has had with Ed in the past.
While not quite as wholesome of bi representation as Stede is, Blackbeard is still a fully fleshed-out bi character, with a full emotional gamut, humor, and intelligence, but also a capability for great cruelty.
