September’s Bi Visibility Month gave us peak bi representation, and it’s not slowing down. From high-profile bi and pansexual coming-outs to rumors about a bi Spider-Man and a ton of bi women to watch right now, here are this season’s bi-lights. Read on for a full dose of bi visibility that lasts more than one day!
Bi Boys on Reality TV
On the latest UK series of Big Brother, 23-year-old housemate Frankie Taber came out as bi in an emotional Diary Room confessional. “I’ve been in pain for so long now, probably about a year and a half, two years,” he said, and that he’d been feeling “guilt and shame” from being in the closet.
In later developments, he revealed that he came out to his girlfriend of five years before coming on the show, and said, “she didn’t really care, to be honest.” This baffled fans, after he’d mentioned having an ex-girlfriend earlier on the show. Either way, it shows that, despite increasingly positive representation of bi men, there’s a long way to go in terms of unraveling biphobia (including internalized), even for Gen Z.
Ex-Traitors star Freddie Fraser has also opened up about the “amazing” reaction to his coming out as bi this summer, when he went public with his boyfriend Bailey Ramsden. “Doing a master’s at 22 and being bisexual has actually been such a blessing in disguise,” he said on Instagram. Plus, we’re super excited to see another bicon, comedian Joe Lycett, represent in The Celebrity Traitors UK, which starts this October. Where are all the bi men? Right here.
Hurrah For the Super-bi Allies
We’ve already seen Milly Alcock muse to Associated Press that her DC Comics character Supergirl would “probably go both ways.” Now, Andrew Garfield has also reminded us that he initially pushed for the character of Peter Parker in Spider-Man to explore his sexuality — and wanted Michael B. Jordan to play a male MJ (ultimately starred by Zendaya). “What if MJ is a dude?… Why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” he told Entertainment Weekly back in 2013, adding recently: “I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit.” Both lead actors are straight, so we’re here for the bi allyship!
Meet the Marvel Bi Guys
Speaking of superheroes, bi actor Ruaridh Mollica is playing the adult version of Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s son Tommy in the upcoming Marvel series Visionquest. In the original comics, Tommy’s character (also known as Speed) has also been portrayed as bi. But, as for this adaptation, Mollica told SFX magazine: “I don’t know if it’s explicitly referenced… But I feel like myself as a bisexual actor embodying Tommy, hopefully that comes through in just personality and self and is something that can be explored in the future.”
Another new Marvel comic book, Queen in Black #4, has had fans asking if Fantastic Four’s Human Torch is bi, after a flirty exchange between Johnny Storm and Nova. More openly out bi men, please!
Our Bi Obsession Continues
We’re already loving bi actress Inde Navarrette, since she starred in the hit horror movie Obsession this summer. Not only has she now signed on as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot, but she will also be in a new sci-fi thriller The Waffle House Index! We’ll be watching!
More Bi Women on Screen Right Now
Don’t miss Lili Reinhart (who came out as bi in 2020) in Amazon’s new rom-com, The Love Hypothesis. She also told Hits Radio that she’s struggled to find a studio willing to take on her planned screen adaptation of a lesbian vampire novella, Carmilla. You can also catch long-time queer ally (and Gentleman Jack star) Suranne Jones in the latest series three of BBC’s Vigil, where she plays bi detective Amy Silva. If you’re already loving Strictly Come Dancing’s first female couple with queer House of Dragon actress Bethany Antonia, then check out the new series of Dancing with the Stars, too. Openly bi reality TV star (of Love Thy Nader) Sarah Jane Nader is part of the show’s second all-female duo with dance partner Hailey Bills.
Badass Bicons Take a Stand
Hacks star Hannah Einbinder and Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon — who have both been open about their bisexuality — were both recently detained by police in New York City while protesting the Israeli Prime Minister’s speech at the U.N. assembly. Einbinder previously told Cannes Film Festival this year, “I think what they know is what I know, which is that the cost of not speaking is higher.” (Check out our Unicorn Scale review of her latest queer movie, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma).
And last but not least, if you’re a fan of Mitch Brown, the first out bi AFL star, check out his appearance in a steamy new music video, “Can’t Wait”, for rising Australian pop star ANDY. Thirst trap alert! That’s all for now; check back next month for more bi plot twists, thirst traps, and pop culture moments.
