Rebecca Sugar is an American animator, director, screenwriter, producer, and songwriter. She is known for creating the hit Cartoon Network series Steven Universe (2013–2019).[1]

Sugar started out professionally as a writer and storyboard artist on the animated television series Adventure Time (2010–2013). In 2012, she made Forbes’ “30 Under 30” entertainment list. Her work has earned her 11 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, as well as a 2018 Peabody Award and a 2019 GLAAD Media Award. After the end of Steven Universe she went on to direct an epilogue series titled Steven Universe: Future (2019–2020), as well as other spin off projects.

She is also known for her webcomic Don't Cry for Me, I'm Already Dead, a story about two brothers whose shared love of The Simpsons takes a tragic turn.

In July 2016, Sugar said at a San Diego Comic-Con panel that the LGBT themes in Steven Universe are based on her own experiences as a bi woman.[2] In 2019 she married longtime partner Ian Jones-Quartey.
