Piper Kerman is known for writing the best-selling memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison (2010). In it, she talks about the year she served in a women's prison for money laundering and drug trafficking. 

After her release from prison, she became an active advocate for prison reform. She currently serves on the board of the Women's Prison Association. She has fought against Minimum Mandatory Sentencing and other judicial reforms[1] and continues to speak out against the many inequalities of the criminal justice system. 




Her memoir later inspired the Netflix show Orange is the New Black (2013-2019). Unlike her character on the show, Piper Kerman has clearly stated that she is bi.
