Gregg Araki

Famous Bis

Gregg Araki (born December 17, 1959) is an American filmmaker. He is noted for his heavy involvement with the New Queer Cinema movement. His film Kaboom (2010) was the first winner of the Cannes Film Festival Queer Palm.

One of his better-known works is the “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy” consisting of Totally Fucked Up (1993), The Doom Generation (1995), and Nowhere (1997). Although these films were not commercial successes at the time, they have since become cult classics.

Araki has identified as gay throughout his career, even when he was openly dating Kathleen Robertson. In a 2014 interview with Out, he was asked if he was bi. He responded,

I don’t really identify as anything, I guess. I have a male partner—we’ve been together for three years—but I don’t really identify. I’d probably identify as gay at this point, but I have been with women.

It’s very common for people to use a monosexual label especially if they are in a longterm relationship. However, Araki is happy to acknowledge his attraction to multiple genders.
