Fern Brady is a multi-talented Scottish stand-up comedian, writer, and podcaster, known for her sharp wit and unapologetic honesty.
Though she initially trained in journalism, Brady’s passion for comedy took root in 2006, setting her on a path to becoming one of the UK’s most distinctive comedic voices.
Brady’s breakthrough came in 2009 while being an intern at Fest Magazine, where she penned an article about a comedy critic trying stand-up — an experience she describes as the catalyst for realizing her comedic aspirations. Her professional debut in stand-up comedy occurred in May 2010.
Over the years, Brady’s talents propelled her to notable achievements, including reaching the finals of esteemed comedy competitions such as So You Think You’re Funny at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. She had appearances on popular panel shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats, Live at the Apollo, and Frankie Boyle’s New World Order.
In 2020, Brady ventured into podcasting, co-creating the BBC podcast Wheel of Misfortune with fellow comedian Alison Spittle.
In 2021, Brady received an autism diagnosis as an adult — a turning point that deepened her advocacy for neurodiversity. Her exploration of life as an autistic individual culminated in the release of her memoir, “Strong Female Character,” in 2023, offering a raw and witty exploration of life as an autistic woman in comedy. Fern Brady joined The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer in 2024, showcasing her baking skills for a charitable cause.
Brady is openly bi. In 2018, during her set at Live at the Apollo, she came out, making waves in the entertainment industry. Reflecting on this moment in a recent interview with the Guardian, she downplayed its significance, remarking that bisexuality is now more openly discussed than before.
Whether through stand-up, writing, or advocacy, Fern Brady continues to challenge norms with her fearless humor and authenticity. Her unique path, from journalism to comedy clubs to neurodiversity awareness, proves that the best punchlines often come from overcoming the struggles of real life.
