Girls & Boys
Bi MediaIf 1994 had had a bi anthem, “Girls & Boys” would have been it. The first single off of Blur’s 1994 album Parklife. The song became ubiquitous in clubs and on radios throughout Europe.
The song was inspired by watching a lot of young Brits partying in Majorca, Damon Albarn recounted,
I went on holiday with Justine last summer to Magaluf and the place was just equally divided between cafés serving up full English breakfasts and really tacky Essex nightclubs. There’s a very strong sexuality about it. I just love the whole idea of it, to be honest. I love herds. All these blokes and all these girls meeting at the watering hole and then just… copulating. There’s no morality involved, I’m not saying it should or shouldn’t happen. My mind’s just getting more dirty. I can’t help it.[1]
With the undeniably catchy refrain “looking for girls who are boys/who like boys to be girls/who do boys like they’re girls/who do girls like they’re boys/always should be someone you really love”, it’s hard to call it anything but a bi anthem now.
