Ianto Jones

Bi Characters

Ianto Jones is a supporting character in the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood (2006-2011). Played by Gareth-David Lloyd, his take on Ianto is still beloved by old and new fans alike. His character arc is highlighted by complex relationships between his friends, family, and lovers, and a notable representation of being openly bi.

Before Ianto joined the Torchwood Institute, he worked for the Torchwood One agency in London, where he was present for the Battle of Canary Wharf during the Dalek and Cyberman invasion. Although he managed to survive, he lost his girlfriend Lisa, who was partially converted into a Cyberman. After the events of the battle, he relocated to Cardiff and sought employment with Torchwood once more, now run by Captain Jack Harkness. He is then hired as a general support officer for the team while he also tries to save what remains of Lisa.

Ianto is introduced to the audience as reserved and introverted and is used by the writers as comedic relief to lighten the mood in between more serious topics. His personality and motives are first explored in season 1 episode 4 “Cyberwoman” (2006), where his attempts to save Lisa ultimately fail, leading him to break down in front of his colleagues and revealing a more emotional side to his character, as well as the lengths he will go to protect the ones he cares about.

As the series progresses, we see Ianto’s evolving relationship with Captain Jack Harkness. Their relationship is depicted as a slow burn, starting with a bit of flirting, and playful banter, and culminating in a serious romantic relationship. We first see hints of Ianto’s feelings for Jack in season 1 episode 8 “They Keep Killing Suzie”(2006) after Jack’s irresponsible behavior upsets him.

We start seeing his bisexuality being touched on more in season 2 episode 1 “Kiss Kiss Bang BangBang”(2008), and in season 2 episode 3 “To the Last Man”, where Ianto and Jack finally share a kiss on-screen. Throughout the second season, their fondness is seen evolving into a loving and maturing relationship. His arc is also fully explored this season, where plot lines delve into his vulnerabilities, fears, and loyalties. We also see his character come out of his shell, with this season showing a more confident, agile, and courageous side of Ianto.

Unfortunately, in season 3 “Children of Earth” (2009), we see him die, as he sacrifices his life to stop the 4-5-6, and passes away in Jack’s arms.

During a Q&A Session with Radio Times in April 2020, Gareth David-Lloyd commented on the portrayal of Ianto and Jack’s relationship on the show, stating that:

[That] kiss with Captain Jack was a huge thing because nobody expected it, and it wasn’t a stereotype… That’s what changed everything… people were actually looking at a representation of themselves. It was just a regular relationship.

The portrayal of Ianto’s bisexuality is depicted authentically and nonchalantly while providing bi representation and visibility that are still making an impact today. Fans still maintain the “Ianto Jones shrine” in Cardiff Bay, attesting to the lasting cultural impact his character has made.
