Bi Characters

Serge, better known as Frenchie, is one of the most intriguing characters in the Amazon Prime Video series The Boys (2019), played by actor Tomer Capon. He is a vital member of the vigilante group that keeps corrupt superheroes in check. His criminal background, chemistry and weaponry skills, as well as his loyal nature, make him indispensable to The Boys.

Frenchie’s past is a wild mix of crime and survival. Born Serge, his nickname “Frenchie” is a nod to his nationality. He has a diverse criminal résumé — arms dealing, killer-for-hire, bank robbery, besides being a skilled chemist and bomb-maker. Frenchie is surprisingly resourceful, intelligent, and has a strong moral compass, even if it often clashes with the law. One of the most compelling aspects of Frenchie’s character is his relationships with other members of “The Boys” and how these relationships have evolved over the seasons.

Frenchie’s relationship with Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) is one of the core emotional threads of the series. Their bond is initially forged through shared trauma and mutual understanding. In Season 1, Frenchie discovers Kimiko, who has been subjected to horrific experiments by a terrorist group. His immediate empathy and determination to help her highlight his compassionate nature. This relationship evolves into a profound emotional connection, characterized by Frenchie’s unwavering support and Kimiko’s gradual trust in him.

In Season 2, their bond deepens further. Episodes like Season 2, Episode 3 “Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men”, and Episode 7 “Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker” showcase their growing closeness and Frenchie’s protective instincts. Despite the romantic undertones, their relationship is primarily based on deep emotional intimacy and mutual respect.

In Season 4, Episode 1, “Department of Dirty Tricks”, their relationship is briefly explained again, showing that there’s no romantic feeling between them, as Kimiko tells him to go ahead with Colin. At the end of the episode, we see Frenchie sleeping with Colin, and it is hinted that he wants to pursue a more serious and lasting relationship with him.

Frenchie’s bisexuality is subtly explored through references to his past relationships and interactions. In Season 2, Episode 6, “The Bloody Doors Off”, a flashback hints at Frenchie’s bisexuality. The episode delves into his past, showing his intimate connection with both Cherie and Jay and emphasizing his fluid approach to love and relationships.

His relationships with other members of The Boys are multifaceted. His bond with Mother’s Milk is one of camaraderie and mutual respect. Frenchie’s dynamic with Billy Butcher is more complicated. Butcher’s brutal and often reckless methods frequently put him at odds with his more empathetic approach. Despite their clashes, there’s an underlying respect and shared goal that binds them.

Through his relationships with Kimiko and other members of The Boys and references to his past lovers, Frenchie’s story is one of emotional growth, redemption, and resilience. His multifaceted personality, marked by a blend of compassion, loyalty, and ruthlessness, makes him one of the most compelling and relatable bi characters we’ve seen in the series.
