Sandra Stephany Mayor Gutiérrez is a Mexican soccer player (or footballer) who plays forward for the Tigres and the national women’s team. Originally from a suburb of Mexico City, she started playing on boys’ teams before later playing on youth national teams.
While Mayor was previously seen dating men, she made headlines in 2016 when she came out as having a relationship with teammate Bianca Sierra. When she was not selected for her national team, Mayor went to play for Iceland for team Þór/KA, and Sierra followed soon after.
This proved to be a successful career move for Mayor, as she won the Icelandic championship in 2017 in the last game 2-0, with her landing one of the goals herself. In fact, in that year, Mayor won a whopping 55 international cups and scored ten goals. These successes — particularly her goal in the Icelandic championship, led to her being named the player of the season.
In June of 2017, after this slew of successes (and a friendly match against Venezuela), Mayor and Sierra were invited back to Mexico to play for the national team, which they accepted. Mayor and Sierra are believed to be some of the first openly queer athletes in modern Mexican history.
