R.O. Kwon

Famous Bis

R. O. Kwon is a South Korean-born American author.

In 2018, she published her nationally bestselling debut novel The Incendiaries which was named a best book of the year by over forty publications. Her writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Paris Review, NPR, and many other publications.

In 2018, Kwon came out as bi on Twitter saying,

Hi, all, I’m bisexual. Haven’t really talked publicly about it, I think in part because I married my first boyfriend, & in part because this could be hard on my parents & family. But there aren’t many publicly queer Korean American writers, & I just want to say hi, we’re here.[1]

In an essay for Oprah Magazine, Kwon spoke more about her experience of coming out and why it was important for her to do so, even though she is in a monogamous relationship.

I’m used to hearing the abiding message that I shouldn’t exist— as a woman, a person of color, an immigrant, and an artist, I’m oh so conscious that large swaths of this country don’t want me here, alive. But, in being bisexual, it’s the first time I keep hearing the idea not just that I shouldn’t exist, but that I don’t.[2]
