Rebel Wilson (born Melanie Elizabeth Bownds) is an Australian comedian, actress, singer, and director. She is best known for her roles in romantic comedies, such as Brynn in Bridesmaids (2011), Janice in What to Expect When You’re Expecting (2012), and as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect trilogy (2012-2017). While Wilson often portrays the “funny fat friend” archetype in her films, she has also taken on more serious roles in recent years, including Fräulein Rahm in Jojo Rabbit (2019).

Wilson was born on March 2nd, 1980, in Sydney, Australia. Despite her academic prowess, particularly in mathematics during high school, she opted to pursue acting as her career path. She earned degrees in Arts and Law from the University of New South Wales before joining the Australian Theatre for Young People. During this period, she appeared in Australian television commercials and late-night comedy shows. With a scholarship funded by Nicole Kidman, Wilson moved to the USA to further her studies and subsequently landed her breakthrough role in Bridesmaids.

Throughout her career, Wilson has faced controversy due to fabricating details about her life to gain further attention. She has made false claims about her heritage, childhood experiences, and age, leading to legal disputes with media outlets that ultimately compelled her to admit her deceit.

In June 2022, Wilson publicly came out as bi when she revealed her relationship with jewelry and fashion designer Ramona Agruma on Instagram. Their engagement was announced in February 2023. Wilson later disclosed feeling pressured to come out due to an impending article in The Sydney Morning Herald intending to reveal her sexual orientation. The newspaper faced backlash and issued a public apology to Wilson and its LGBT readers.

Wilson’s memoir, Rebel Rising, was released in April 2024. It gained attention for her candid discussion of discomfort while filming “The Brothers Grimsby.”

In October 2023, Wilson launched her own dating app called “Fluid Dating”. The app aims to provide a platform for people to connect based on shared interests and values rather than solely on appearance. Wilson’s app emphasizes inclusivity and authenticity, reflecting her own experiences navigating the dating world.

Although she has openly embraced her bisexual attraction patterns, she chooses not to identify with any specific label.
