Josh Ryan Hutcherson is an American actor and producer. He began his career in the early 2000s, initially appearing in commercials and minor film and television roles. He gained prominence in his teenage years with leading roles in films such as Little Manhattan (2005), Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005), RV (2006), Bridge to Terabithia (2007), and Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008).
Hutcherson’s breakthrough came in 2011 when he was cast as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games film series (2012–2015), a role that brought him international fame and several awards, including three MTV Movie Awards and a People’s Choice Award.
Following The Hunger Games, Hutcherson explored a variety of roles in independent films and transitioned into production. He starred in Detention (2011), The Forger (2012), and Escobar: Paradise Lost (2015), also serving as an executive producer for these projects. From 2017 to 2020, he starred in the Hulu comedy series Future Man and voiced the lead character in the Netflix anime Ultraman (2019–2023).
In recent years, Hutcherson has continued to expand his repertoire. He starred in the commercially successful horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023) and the action film The Beekeeper (2024). His interest in filmmaking has seen him direct short films and music videos, further showcasing his talents behind the camera.
Hutcherson has described his sexuality as “mostly straight”, acknowledging the fact that he could be attracted to men in addition to women in the future.
In a 2012 interview with E! News, Hutcherson revealed his deep personal connection to gay rights activism, sharing that he lost two uncles to AIDS during the epidemic, both of whom were gay. At 19, Hutcherson had already become a supporter of gay equal rights, working closely with the group Straight But Not Narrow, co-founded by his best friend Avan Jogia. Hutcherson recounted a touching story of a 14-year-old boy from Florida who found the courage to come out to his friends thanks to SBNN’s support.
This same year, he received the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Awards, becoming the youngest recipient of the honor, joining the ranks of past honorees like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlize Theron. Hutcherson expressed immense pride in his activism, believing his late uncles would be proud of his efforts to make a positive impact on the world.
