Dolores del Río (born María de los Dolores Asúnsolo López-Negrete) was a Mexican actor who performed in film, television, and theater. With a career spanning more than 50 years, she is regarded as the first major Latina star in Hollywood and one of the most important female figures in the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and 1950s.
After being discovered in Mexico, her film career in America began in 1925 with a series of roles in successful silent films. With the advent of talkies, she transitioned to sound and continued to perform in Hollywood. In the early 1940s, as her Hollywood career began to decline, del Río returned to Mexico and joined the Mexican film industry just when it was at its peak.
When del Río returned to her native country, she became one of the most important stars of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, and many of del Río’s Mexican films are considered classic masterpieces that helped boost Mexican cinema worldwide.
In addition to her three husbands and numerous male lovers, del Río was a part of Hollywood's "Sewing Circle", a group of sapphic Hollywood stars. She is believed to have had affairs with Marlene Dietrich (#Bi2) and Greta Garbo (#Bi2).
