FacesAbout Me
I am a college professor in Los Angeles. I teach history, and my research is on the “old West.” I enjoy traveling, woodworking, photography, reading, listening to alt-country and Americana, and going to the movies. If money was no object I would write alternate history novels and split my time between an apartment in Hong Kong, a ranch in Montana, and a small house in Santa Monica…
What Being Bi Means to Me
It means being truthful with myself, and acknowledging a part of my identity that is not always easy to express or understand.
If the World Knew About Bisexuals
Not all bisexuals are poly-amorous. I am in a committed, opposite-sex relationship, and I don’t feel the need to cheat on my partner with someone from either sex. But that does not mean I am not bisexual.
My Path to Bisexual Identity
It was a plodding, uncertain, circuitous journey. At first I thought it was a phase, but eventually I could count the duration of that phase in years, then decades. At some point I refused to continue being confused about it and simply acknowledged who I am.
The Toughest Thing About Being Bi
Society questions the legitimacy of one’s bisexual identity when that person is in a monogamous relationship, especially when one’s partner is opposite-sex. As if married straight folks never “check out” other members of the opposite sex or watch porn… It is a destructive double-standard.
The Best Thing About Being Bi
I’m going to keep that one to myself. 😉
How People Reacted When I Came Out
My partner and close friends are very positive. Some acquaintances in the past, however, were less supportive. I don’t shout it from the rooftops, but I am very open about it with most people. My parents still don’t know (unless they are somehow reading this now. Hi Mom and Dad!)
