M. K. England’s 2025 sapphic YA romance Roll for Love was published by Running Kids Press, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. Told in alternating point-of-view chapters, the novel explores the friendship — and budding romance — between two high school seniors: Harper Reid and Ollie Shifflet.
Harper never imagined that her senior year would be so tinged with grief. After her grandfather’s death, she and her mom move cross-country from Portland to Virginia, forcing Harper to leave behind her friends, who are also her beloved Dungeons & Dragons group. Starting her senior year on the farm where she once spent childhood summers isn’t part of her plan — but reuniting with Ollie Shifflet, her former best friend and first crush, makes the transition a little easier.
Ollie is excited to see Harper back. Sort of. On one hand, she enjoyed hanging out with Harper growing up, but on the other, Ollie used to have a crush on Harper. Which is a problem because Ollie isn’t out as bi. She feels pressured to keep her sexuality a secret because she isn’t sure how people in her small, rural town will react — and Ollie loves it there. She wants to stay in town forever. What if coming out ruins her plan?
But staying closeted gets complicated when Harper learns that Ollie and her friends are launching a new D&D campaign. Doubly so when Harper offers to host their sessions in her grandfather’s old woodshop. As the two girls reconnect outside the game, the chemistry between their characters in-game starts to get complicated. At first, it’s easy to dismiss the sparks as roleplay, but the line between fantasy and reality soon begins to blur.
The book includes scenes from the D&D campaign, allowing readers to experience the excitement of a fantasy adventure alongside characters’ more mundane daily lives, in which they must decide who they want to be after high school ends: professionally, personally, and to each other.
Kirkus praised the inclusion of the D&D scenes for how they “inject action” into the story. Other readers praised the story’s exploration of grief and its found family vibes.
Roll for Love is England’s seventh novel.
