“Basket Case” is a 1994 rock hit by the award-winning band Green Day. It was an instant hit when it was released, spending five weeks at number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Charts. At the end of the year, it charted fourth for the year. The song’s popularity has since remained high. In 2006, it ranked in Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest songs of all time. More recently, in 2024, Forbes magazine ranked it number 36 in their list of The 50 Best Songs of the 1990s. It has been used as a track in video games such as Fortnite and Just Dance.

Although the song is not explicitly bi, the lyrics give some bi vibes. In the second chorus, the lyrics read

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it’s lack of sex
That’s bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said ‘My life’s a bore’
So quit my whining cause
It’s bringing her down

The line that reads “I went to a whore he said my life’s a bore” indicates that the author has male interest. Later in the song, the gender changes and says, “it’s bringing her down”. This ambiguity on the gender of the “whore” builds the case for a bi song. Lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong is bi himself, which solidifies the suspicion.

In a Rolling Stones interview, Armstrong says, “I wanted to challenge myself and whoever the listener might be. It’s also looking at the world and saying, ‘It’s not as black and white as you think. This isn’t your grandfather’s prostitute – or maybe it was”. This further confirms the bisexual nature of the song.

Ultimately, the lyrics leave enough ambiguity to reasonably be considered bi. Still, Armstrong is a proud bi icon, and his openness about his identity adds an extra layer of meaning to the song. Whether intentional or not, “Basket Case” resonates with listeners who see themselves reflected in its fluidity and questioning tone.
