Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-2021) was a police procedural comedy that aired on Fox and later NBC. This half-hour comedy follows seven NYPD detectives and their coworkers in the fictional 99th Brooklyn precinct.

The cast is full of oddballs and caricatures, but as the season’s progress, you really get to know the characters and understand their humanity. One of those characters is fan-favorite Detective Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). Her hard-as-nails exterior makes it hard for her coworkers to imagine her in any type of relationship. In season three, she meets Adrian Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas). Their relationship is intense and weird and often makes Rosa’s coworker uncomfortable. They quickly become engaged, but Adrian has to fake his own death and go into hiding. When he emerges, he becomes a Private Investigator. In season five, Rosa breaks up with Adrian.

In 2016, Stephanie Beatriz came out as bi on Twitter.

When writer Dan Goor asked if she would like Rosa Diaz to be bi, she was thrilled by the idea and helped the writers to create Rosa’s bi storyline.[1]

Her coming out was exactly what you would expect of Rosa, and fans loved it.

Rosa is consistently held up as an example of bi representation done right. For bi.org’s review full review of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Rosa’s storyline, check out our Unicorn Scale.
