Shirin, portrayed by Desiree Akhavan, plays a 20-something bi Brooklynite who does not have it all figured out.
While mourning the loss of her girlfriend, she starts a job teaching 5-year-olds about making movies and tries repeatedly to come out to her family. Her parents are well-off Persian immigrants who are loving, kind, and educated, but not interested in hearing about their daughter's sexuality.
