Heather Douglas, also known as Moondragon, is a powerful telepath, martial artist, and cosmic figure in the Marvel Universe. She first appeared in Iron Man #54 (1973). Her origin starts with the death of her parents in a car crash caused by Thanos during one of his early visits to Earth, in which Heather was the only survivor. After the incident, she was taken in by the Eternals of Titan, Thanos’s own extended family. She was raised by Mentor (Thanos’s father) and trained by the monks of Shao-Lom, who helped her develop her vast mental abilities and physical discipline.

The monks gave her the name Moondragon because of her intense focus and her claim to have conquered the Dragon of the Moon, a powerful cosmic entity. Over time, it’s revealed that this entity still has some influence over her, which becomes a recurring issue in her storylines. Moondragon is a master telepath and telekinetic, able to read and control minds, move objects, and manipulate emotions. She’s also a peak-level martial artist, capable of fighting superhumans in hand-to-hand combat.

She’s been a member of several major teams, including the Avengers, the Defenders, and later the Guardians of the Galaxy. She’s known for walking a fine line between hero and anti-hero. While she often fights for good, she’s not afraid to take control of people’s minds or make decisions others consider morally questionable. In Avengers #219–220 (1982), she tries to control an entire planet’s population and is called out by the team, leading to her departure.

Her story takes a major turn during Marvel’s 2000s cosmic revival. She returns in Annihilation: Conquest (2007–2008) and becomes a founding member of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy series launched in 2008. During this era, she enters a committed relationship with Phyla-Vell, the daughter of the original Captain Marvel. Their relationship is fully visible on the page and plays an important role in both characters’ arcs. They fight side-by-side, deal with major losses, and remain closely connected across multiple storylines.

Moondragon is one of Marvel’s earliest openly queer characters. She identifies as bisexual and has had relationships with both men and women, including Daredevil and Thor. Her bisexuality is first confirmed in Captain Marvel #32 (2000), when she kisses Marlo Chandler. Marlo later realizes she still has unresolved feelings for her ex, Rick Jones. The breakup hits Moondragon hard. She lies to both Marlo and Rick to make the situation easier for them, though she agrees to remain friends with Marlo.

Shortly after that, she meets Phyla-Vell while fighting alongside her brother Genis-Vell. Phyla, who is canonically a lesbian, shows interest in Moondragon almost immediately — within panels of Moondragon’s breakup with Marlo — and the two quickly become a couple. They’ve been paired consistently ever since, and their relationship remains one of Marvel’s most notable long-term queer partnerships.

In terms of power, Moondragon is one of the most mentally dangerous characters in Marvel’s cosmic roster. She has faced off against beings like Thanos and the Dragon of the Moon and often walks a thin line between control and corruption. Her biggest struggle has always been her own ego and her tendency to believe she knows what’s best, especially when using her psychic abilities to manipulate others.

She’s also died and returned more than once. In one case, she merges with an alternate version of herself to survive. In others, she sacrifices herself or is resurrected during larger cosmic events. Despite her moral flaws and complicated history, Moondragon consistently fights for survival, justice, and balance in the universe.
