Mel (played by Madeleine Sami) is one of the two main characters in the 2018 comedy from New Zealand, The Breaker Upperers.
Mel owns and operates a two-person agency with her best friend, Jen (Jackie van Beek), whose specialty is delivering the news of a break-up to the partner their client is afraid to confront. They use a variety of comedic approaches to achieve this end.
Remarkably, Mel uses the term “bi” to define herself easily and freely, and no one in the film has any qualms about her sexuality. Even in modern installments of comedy, this is rare, and even more rare when the sexuality is not a source of conflict, either with others or with Mel herself.
