Mary Agnes

Mary Agnes (played by Merritt Weaver) is a character in the Netflix Western series, Godless. 

She is one of the leaders of LaBelle, whose population mostly consists of women after a mining accident claimed the lives of most of the men in the Colorado village— including her late husband, the mayor. Under these new circumstances, Mary Agnes starts up a relationship with Anna (played by Whitney Able), a sex worker-cum-schoolteacher.

Wearing men’s clothes and with a terse nature, Mary Agnes is an excellent shot and one of the smartest women in LaBelle. When her brother, the town sheriff, confronts her about the new affair, Mary Agnes speaks plainly but beautifully about acknowledging her love for both her dead husband and her new paramour, and how there is little difference between them— and she will not be shamed into stopping her courtship with Anna.
