Lucifer Samael Morningstar, otherwise known as the devil, originated in Neil Gaiman's influential graphic novel The Sandman. After receiving his own spin-off series, Lucifer, written by Mike Carrey, he appeared in a variety of other DC and Vertigo publications.

In 2015 FOX created the series Lucifer centered on the character and featuring Tom Ellis as Lucifer.

Although many writers have re-interpreted the character over the years, Lucifer is generally portrayed as a bon vivant. He is also heartbroken by the fact that his father, God, rejected him and cast him into hell, and angry because he feels God created mankind only to doom most people to a predetermined fate of damnation. In other words, all kinds of divine family drama. Once Lucifer abandons his post as ruler of Hell and moves up to earth, he chooses to exist in Los Angeles, where he runs one of the city's hottest nightspots and helps the LAPD fight crime.

On the show, Lucifer is very openly attracted to men and women. In "Stewardess Interruptus" (Season 2, Episode 11), a murder investigation finds that the only apparent connection between two murder victims is the fact that they'd once shared Lucifer's bed. The LAPD interviews all of his lovers (male and female) from the past two months in an effort to find the culprit:

Over the seasons, it's Lucifer's many relationships with humans that teach him how to be the best lord of hell.
