Captain Ed Mercer is the main character on the FOX space comedy-drama, The Orville. The show is a spoof of Star Trek-like shows of science fiction. Ed is the captain of the titular starship, with his ex-wife Kelly Grayson as his first officer.
Ed is a capable, if sometimes bumbling, leader who encounters all types of beings and cultures in the run of the series. In Episode 9 of the first season, Ed has a run-in with Darulio, the alien with whom Ed discovered Kelly having an affair, leading to their divorce. While Darulio is visiting the ship on a diplomatic mission, his pheromones arise a desire in Ed wherein the two have a quick, steamy affair.
It is implied, however, with conversations with Kelly that this is not the first time Ed has expressed interest in humans — or aliens — that are not women. While the show never uses the word “bisexual” and Ed dances around using a label, his attractions clearly go where many queers have gone before.
