Chère

Bi Characters

Image/IMDb

Chère is a supporting character in the 2025 mystery-dramedy Honey Don’t! The film is the second in a planned “lesbian B-movie trilogy” from director Ethan Coen. Chère is played by Russian/German actress and model Lera Abova.

Chère is a French liaison for a drug company that is pushing illicit substances through a contact with a Bakersfield street-front church led by Reverend Drew (Chris Evans). She is funny, mysterious, sexy, and clever, but also ruthless and morally gray, as are many characters/suspects in murder-mysteries.

She is initially presented as a suspect in the film’s first murder, as she is seen meddling with evidence at the scene of the crime before police arrive. But we soon learn she was removing a piece of jewelry that could connect the victim with the church, and was not involved in the fatal car accident. However, in a very pulpy scene later on, she does have sex with Reverend Drew before killing him for bringing up the profile of the drug company. She is spotted leaving the scene of the crime by lead character/detective Honey O’Donahue (Margaret Qualley).

In the final scene, Chère is seen flirting openly with Honey at a street intersection. Their attraction is mutual, and the audience knows Honey recognizes Chère, but it is unclear whether Chère recognizes Honey, leaving the film on a vague note.

Abova has gone on record saying that she is bisexual in 2019, so we do have a bi person playing a bi character here, which is a plus.

Chère has her fun qualities, but overall, is not a well-drawn character. Though her sexuality is not the focal point of her character schematic, she does not have a lot more to her than her other dastardly actions and feelings as listed above. This is common in pulp and B-movies to work more in caricature, but still ends up not being the best bi representation out there
