Charlie Morningstar is the optimistic and big-hearted daughter of Lucifer and Lilith, the ruling king and queen of Hell in Hazbin Hotel, created, directed, and executive-produced by Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano.

Growing up surrounded by power and privilege, Charlie was also exposed early to the darker realities of her realm. Each year, she witnessed the exterminations carried out by exorcist angels, brutal purges meant to control Hell’s overpopulation by destroying sinner demons. Rather than accepting this as a necessary evil, Charlie saw it as a tragedy. Those experiences shaped her defining belief: even the worst souls deserve a chance to change.

Determined to find an alternative, Charlie founded the Hazbin Hotel, a bold and controversial experiment aimed at rehabilitating sinners instead of condemning them to destruction. While she fully understands that many of Hell’s residents committed terrible acts in life, she views their annual extermination as a waste of potential. Charlie genuinely believes redemption is possible through self-improvement, compassion, and guidance — a viewpoint that makes her something of an outlier in Hell’s cynical culture.

Charlie’s idealism is both her greatest strength and her biggest vulnerability. Her unwavering hope inspires others, but it can also leave her naïve to the practical and political obstacles standing in her way. When her passion and sincerity don’t immediately win people over, she takes it deeply to heart, sometimes doubting whether she truly knows how to make her dream work.

Charlie is bisexual and open about who she is. She is also deeply devoted to her girlfriend, Vaggie, who is both her romantic partner and closest confidant. The two balance each other well: Charlie brings warmth, faith, and vision, while Vaggie provides realism, caution, and fierce protection. Vaggie supports Charlie’s dream wholeheartedly, even when she worries Charlie’s trust and optimism could put her in danger, particularly when it comes to questionable figures like Alastor. While Vaggie can get frustrated with Charlie’s tendency to burst into song or rush into risky situations, her loyalty and care for Charlie never waver.

At her core, Charlie is a dreamer trying to bring hope to a place built on despair. Whether she succeeds or fails, her willingness to try, to believe people can be better, is what truly sets her apart.
