The character of Alex in the novel You Exist Too Much (2020) by Palestinian-American author Zaina Arafat, goes to the same therapy group as the unnamed narrator of the novel, who is herself bi. The unnamed narrator says that “Alex, who I kept wanting to call Eugene because he looked like one, was an engineer with a perpetually exasperated expression on his face”. He is from New Hampshire, and he is Jewish.
Alex has a wife and children. His wife is said to be “an alcoholic” and, when the participants in the therapy group are revealing their secrets, Alex’s secret is that he “had slept with a man while his wife was away at rehab”.
Although various bi women are mentioned in the novel (including, of course, the unnamed narrator herself), Alex is the only representation of male bisexuality in You Exist Too Much.
