Therese

Therese is one of the main characters in the 2015 drama, Carol. The film is based on the classic LGBT novel The Price of Salt (1952) by Patricia Highsmith. Therese is played by Rooney Mara.

Therese is a budding photographer in 1950s New York City who works in a department store as a shopgirl when a customer, Carol (played by Cate Blanchett) starts up a subtle flirtation with her. While the film often gets hailed as a “modern gay classic”, it is clear from viewing the story that, while Therese is intrigued by and attracted to Carol, she is open to having relationships with men. She has a boyfriend at the beginning of the film but begins to lose interest in him as the romance grows between her and the upper-class housewife who is processing a painful divorce.
