Christopher "Chris" Smith, also known as the Peacemaker, is a ruthless superhero committed to achieving peace at any cost, even if it means resorting to violence and killing numerous individuals in the process. He’s the main character in the superhero TV series Peacemaker (2022-), created by James Gunn for HBO Max, based on the DC Comics character of the same name.
He was a member of the second Task Force X (colloquially known as the Suicide Squad) strike team sent on a mission to Corto Maltese and eventually became Peacemaker, a mentally unstable pacifist diplomat who grew so committed to peace, he eventually decided to enforce it by any means necessary. He wears a bright costume, an oddly-shaped chrome helmet with a dove engraved on it.
Despite his violent methods, he justifies them as necessary for the greater good, no matter how many people he needs to kill, hurt, injure, or emotionally destroy along the way. However, he gives people he appreciates a warning before he attacks. Over time and after reflecting on his actions, Smith evolves and expresses discomfort with killing, moving beyond his previous ideology. Smith then started taking small steps towards becoming a better person, but became haunted by a hallucination of his deceased father.
First appearing on screen portrayed by John Cena in the movie The Suicide Squad (2021), Peacemaker was originally intended to be a straight superhero. In the process of creating the show, James Gunn and John Cena developed a well-rounded and very open bi male superhero protagonist.[1] Although his methods don’t stand for the best representation of a bi men, the character's development and exploration of cultural stigmas that many bi men face, provide a much-needed representation in the superhero genre.
Peacemaker is a very comical character, and we get a lot of funny hints about his bisexuality throughout the show. Like the way he discusses Aquaman with a janitor:
He bangs chicks, good for him. He fucks dudes, got no problem with that. He starts fucking fish? That's taking it a step too far.
There’s also Peacemaker’s relationship with Vigilante, although it has not been confirmed as something more than an alliance/friendship, there are a lot of moments between them that make you wonder about the nature of their relationship. In one scene in episode 5, Peacemaker gives nicknames to everyone in a locker room based on how their penis looks, and when confronted about it, he replies, "It's a locker room, dude. What am I gonna do? Look at a towel?"
We finally get confirmation on episode 7 of the first season, where Peacemaker is confirmed as bi during an emotional fight to the death with his father.
