Danny (played by Lucas Hedges) is a supporting character in the 2017 teen drama film Lady Bird, written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Danny is a talented theatre kid who flirts with and starts dating the titular character during the course of a play they are cast in together. During a post-play cast outing, Lady Bird catches Danny making out with one of their male castmates in the bathroom. Lady Bird then goes on to claim that Danny is “gay” but that she supports him as a friend.
Danny never uses the label for himself and was in fact the one who assertively pursued Lady Bird for a romantic and sexual relationship and told her he loved her. It plays as frustrating since the story and screenplay worked overtime to establish Danny’s attraction to her and gives him no time to address his attraction or confusion about being attracted to more than one gender.
