Blake Moran is a character in the American network political drama series Madam Secretary (2014–2019). He is played by actor Erich Bergen.
Blake is Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord’s (Téa Leoni) assistant. Never far from her side and always impeccably prepared, Blake is a tireless, loyal, and integral member of Elizabeth’s inner circle. He anticipates her every need, easily does the work of 10 people, and navigates the thorniest situations with diplomatic tact and professionalism.
Early on, Blake is portrayed in a way that seems gay-coded, though he never calls himself gay and consistently leaves the sex of his unseen romantic partners vague. In season three episode 22, “Revelation”, Blake meets an ex-boyfriend, and the two argue over what initially seems to be Blake's refusal to come out as a gay man. As it happens, Blake, we learn, is bisexual, something his former lover rejects. The encounter upsets Blake so much that the usually private and even-keeled assistant holds up Secretary McCord’s motorcade to come out as bisexual. He delivers a passionate and powerful bi monologue in which he expresses the pent-up frustrations so many bi people feel about being erased or misunderstood for not fitting neatly into a “straight” or “gay” binary. He opens up about the biphobia he has experienced from both straight and gay folks, how people find him confusing, and why for so long her felt that his sexuality was none of anyone’s business, but that, he realized, if he can't be honest with the people he cares about, he cannot have honest experiences with them.
Throughout the rest of the series, we see Blake for who he is: an openly bi man who has relationships with both men and women. In the later seasons of the show, Blake befriends Elizabeth’s eldest daughter, Stevie, and the relationship begins to develop into something more. The two share a kiss, but then mutually decide not to pursue romance and to remain plutonic. Blake goes on to fall in love with a man and become engaged, though due to his perfectionist obsession with planning his dream wedding, the engagement stretches on forever. Blake, along with Sara Ramirez's character Kat Sandoval, represent the bi characters on Madam Secretary.
