Asami Sato is one of the main characters in the animated television series The Legend of Korra (2012-2014). She is a member of Team Avatar along with the brothers Mako, the firebender, and Bolin, the earthbender. She is the only daughter of the millionaire businessman and founder of Future Industries Hiroshi Sato, known for manufacturing vehicles for civil and military use.
Even though she is not able to control any element, she represents a fundamental piece of Team Avatar, thanks to her excellent combat skills and the ability to handle different vehicles such as Satomobiles, motorcycles, motor boats, and basically anything invented by his father’s company. She is even capable of designing the Future Industries Aircraft. She is smart, practical, and highly capable, having the ability to repair and build vehicles with limited resources.
Asami is optimistic, cheerful, and loving, but also strong-willed, which helps her face any difficulties.
She appeared in the chapter “The Voice in the Night” of the first season, where she meets Mako by hitting him while driving, and as an apology, she invites him to dinner. Their relationship began almost immediately, and they spent a lot of time together in the following weeks (during that time, she also met Korra, her romantic rival). However, jealousy and the confirmation that Mako had kissed Korra caused this relationship to end, although on good terms, being able to talk about everything that happened and staying as friends.
On the other hand, Asami and Korra became friends after the Avatar was able to get over her jealousy and accept her prejudice against Asami. As the seasons go by, their friendship grows stronger and their connection closer, supporting and encouraging each other. Although this relationship was handled during the series only as a “friendship”, several indications — such as the Avatar blushing over Asami’s comments and the confirmation of the relationship by one of the creators — are what corroborate that Asami is, in fact, an extraordinarily strong bi girl.
