Magik (Birth name Illyana Nikolaievna Rasputina), is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics Universe. She is mostly known for her affiliation with the X-Men, and for being the youngest sister of the X-Men teammate Colossus. Over the years, she has become an important member of the X-Men’s younger teams, such as the Hellions and the New Mutants.

Magik is a mutant sorceress linked to the demonic realm of Limbo. As a child, she was kidnapped by the villain Arcade, and quickly rescued by the X-Men. Shortly after, she was once again kidnapped by the demon Belasco and taken to Limbo, an evil demonic dimension that exists outside of time and space. In the few seconds that passed on Earth, Magik aged years in Limbo, which caused her to manifest her mutant powers and master different dark arts as Belasco’s apprentice, eventually overthrowing him and becoming the ruler of Limbo.

Her list of abilities includes teleporting via stepping discs through the Limbo dimension, psionic shields, sorcery, and summoning demonic beings. As the Sorceress Supreme of Limbo, she has total control over the dimension. When wielding the Soulsword (a blade made from her life force), it magnifies her magical abilities and interferes with magical constructs.

Throughout her comic book run, she has been affiliated with various superhero teams, but she is best known for her affiliation with the New Mutants, a team of younger mutants trained under the tutelage of the older X-Men members. Her more recent story arc had her working as a main member of the X-Men team, using her teleportation skills and sorcery to the team’s advantage.

Alongside the New Mutants, Magik experienced unimaginable adventures and difficult moments. Her tenure was cut short when she sacrificed herself to prevent Limbo from corrupting Earth, reborn later as the child she was before being kidnapped. Tragically, she was infected by the deadly Legacy Virus and passed away in The Uncanny X-Men #303 (1993). After her death, she is resurrected by Belasco, and returned as a comic regular, appearing in New X-Men #38 (2007) and New Mutants vol. 3 (2009-2011). Lately, she has been a main character in The New Mutants: Dead Souls (2018) and in Strange Academy #1 (2020) as a teacher in Dr. Strange’s Sorcerer School.

One of Magik’s most important story arcs happens in the Inferno crossover, where her transformation into Darkchylde (her ultimate darker and demonic form), and in The Quest for Magik, where her X-Men teammates go on a mission to rescue her from Limbo after her death and resurrection.

Magik’s sexuality has been a topic of discussion among fans and has been addressed in the comics. While her storylines have often focused more on her struggle to use her powers for good rather than her love life, there have been indications about her sexuality.

In 2019, Marvel’s comic New Mutants #5 pages 18-19 revealed that Magik is bisexual. Showing that she’s interested in anything – male or female, human or alien, stopping short of explicit confirmation. In the 2020 film adaptation of The New Mutants, Magik is portrayed by actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who presents her as a complex character whose sexuality is not overtly defined.

Magik’s impact is notable within the broader X-Men narrative. She represents themes of trauma, redemption, and the struggle between light and dark. Her character continues to evolve, reflecting changing societal attitudes towards complex characters in comic books.
