Danny (played by Lucas Hedges) is a supporting character in the 2017 teen drama Lady Bird, written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Danny is a talented theatre kid who flirts with and starts dating the titular character during a play they are cast in together. During a post-play cast outing, Lady Bird catches Danny making out with one of their male castmates in the bathroom. Lady Bird then goes on to claim that Danny is “gay” but that she supports him as a friend.
Danny never uses the label for himself and is the one who assertively pursued Lady Bird for a romantic and sexual relationship and told her he loved her. It is frustrating since the story and screenplay worked overtime to establish Danny’s attraction to her and give him no time to address his attraction or confusion about being attracted to more than one gender.
