Butch Cassidy (played by Paul Newman) is one of the two titular characters in the 1969 Western comedy, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Butch is a train robber in partnership with his friend, gunslinger Sundance. Butch and Sundance are based on real-life train robbers of the same name. Butch is an excellent strategist when it comes to his line of work and has an easy, charming demeanor coupled with a wry sense of humor. When he and Sundance hit a banker’s train one time too many, he sets the two of them off on a long retreat from relentless bounty hunters — including leaving the country entirely.
Butch maintains a flirtatious relationship with his partner-in-crime’s lover, Etta. But his bromance with Sundance, which often gets them into life-and-death situations, can easily be read as the greater romance of the film.
