Alex Claremont-Diaz is the main character in the 2019 YA romantic-comedy novel, Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. In 2023, the novel was adapted into a feature film for Amazon Prime. Actor Taylor Zakhar Perez played Alex. He will also reprise the role in the upcoming sequel, Red, White and Royal Wedding, of which McQuiston is co-author of the screenplay.
Red, White and Royal Blue is told from the first-person point of view of Alex, the son of the President of the United States and an aspiring lawyer and politician. Alex is warm, smart, funny, and politically savvy, making for an engaging narrator. At the beginning of the story, we only hear of Alex’s past of flirting with and dating multiple women. But as he is forced to form a damage-control friendship with Prince Henry of England after a scuffle turns into a political fiasco, they begin to form a true bond. Alex begins to develop feelings for Henry. Through this, Alex realizes he is bi. This is not a source of conflict for him, but rather the high-stakes status of both him and the prince, and what a queer relationship could do or mean for a member of the royal family.
Alex has queer friends throughout the book and has no problem both standing up for them and claiming the label of bisexual for himself when he realizes he is bi. His family and friends are accepting when he comes out to them in private and are ready and willing to support him in public as well. And when he does come out in public, Alex also makes sure people know he is a proud bi man and that he will do what he can with his position of power to protect those more vulnerable members of the LGBT community.
