She began acting as a child in the 1990s with small parts in a number of television series or made-for-TV movies. By the mid-2000s, she was landing leading roles in independent films including Pretty Persuasion (2005), Running with Scissors (2006), and Across the Universe (2007), and has since become a recognizable star.
Some of Wood’s most memorable characters to date include the bi vampire Queen Sophie-Anne on True Blood (2008–2014), Dolores Abernathy in the HBO series Westworld (2016–2022), Evan in What We Do in the Shadows (2019-), and as the voice of Queen Iduna from Disney's Frozen II (2019).
In addition to her acting career, Wood formed a band — Evan + Zane — with musician Zane Carney in 2018. Their first album, Dreams, was released in 2022.
In 2011, she came out as bi on Twitter.
In 2017, while accepting the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award, she used the opportunity to talk about her bisexuality and the importance of bi representation.
Wood was also briefly married to actor Jamie Bell.
