It’s a mother and daughter coming out story.
Honey Boo Boo’s mother, known lovingly by reality show fans as “Mama June,” and Honey Boo Boo’s sister Pumpkin both came out on Inside Edition.
Pumpkin wanted to talk about her own sexuality, saying that she likes boys and girls. She said proudly, "I’m attracted to females, and I’m attracted to males. You cannot hide who you truly are”.
Then, she outed her mother.
“She’s gay. June’s gay too”, Pumpkin said.
“Bisexual”, Mama June corrected.
Over the four seasons on TLC, the redneck family never broached same-sex attractions very much. However, there was a gay uncle, Lee Thompson, whom Honey Boo Boo dubbed “Uncle Poodle”.
Set in rural Georgia, the “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” reality show followed the family as they took their overweight beauty queen Honey Boo Boo to contests. The show evolved to following the family’s every day life through the eyes of Honey (whose real name is Alana Thompson). They ate roadkill they found on the side of the road for dinner and lived altogether in a small house.
The show was suddenly canceled in October 2014 after Mama June was reported to be dating a convicted child molester. The TLC network ended the series even after Mama June said she was no longer seeing the man. Mama June also has since split from her husband Sugar Bear, Alana’s father.
Alana is now 9 and her sister Pumpkin is 15. On Inside Edition, Pumpkin texted a former girlfriend she wanted to start seeing again.
Mama June says in the interview, “I’m not going to lie, I played in the minors but never went pro”.
That means that she did “fool around” with women, but never had a long-term relationship with a woman.
Mama June was asked about how her neighbors in McIntyre, Georgia would react, and she said, “Haters gonna hate”. It didn’t seem to bother her.
She’s proudly out as bisexual, like her daughter.
