Dove Cameron is an American actress and singer, most well known for her work on Disney Channel, including the hit show Liv and Maddie (2013-2017) and the popular Descendants (2015-2019) film trilogy.

Carmeron was born on 15th of January 1996 in Bainbridge Island, Washington. At 8 years old she joined her local community theatre, and at 11, landed her first significant role as young Cosette in their production of Les Miserables. Outside of theatre, she found it hard to fit in, and says she was relentlessly bullied throughout highschool. Despite this, Cameron poured her energy into her budding career; “I became very passionate about [becoming an actress and singer]. I fully immersed myself.”

In 2013, Cameron had a major breakthrough in her career when she was cast in Disney Channel’s original show Liv and Maddie as the titular characters, using clever camera angles and editing to simultaneously play both twins on screen. The show ran for 4 seasons, concluding in 2017. The show’s success, and her role within it, led to further Disney opportunities, and in 2015, Cameron was cast as the lead protagonist Mal in the Disney Channel original movie Descendents. The film was a major success, and was followed by sequels in 2017 and 2019, with Cameron recommencing her lead role.

During her time with Disney, she formed a musical duo with then fiancee and Liv and Maddie co-star Ryan McCarten, called The Girl and the Dreamcatcher. Together they released four singles, all which received moderate amounts of success, but when the pair broke up in October 2016 after 4 years together, the duo disbanded. Cameron continued on her music career solo, releasing several singles including Boyfriend, Breakfast, and Bad Idea.

Even before she came out publicly, Cameron had been a 436 vocal supporter of the LGBT community for many years. In 2020, she described herself as “super queer” during an instragram live, though following accusations that she was “queerbating” her audience, she revealed in her June 2021 story for Gay Times that she also considered herself bi.

Her hit single “Boyfriend”, which went viral on Tiktok in February 2022, is a bi anthem. In the song Cameron explicitly describes her wish for a relationship with an unnamed girl who is already in a relationship with a man, as she sings “I could be a better boyfriend than him.” In a press release, Cameron commented “In writing “Boyfriend,” I feel like I finally found my sound, my perspective, and myself in a way I wasn't sure I ever would. I am so immensely happy to have this song and this part of me out in the world.”
