Louise Sawyer

Bi Characters

Image/Looper

Louise is one of the titular characters in the 1991 road trip drama, Thelma & Louise, directed by Ridley Scott and written by Callie Khouri (who won an Oscar for her original screenplay).

Louise, who is played by bi icon Susan Sarandon, is a waitress who embarks on an initial fishing trip with her best friend, Thelma Dickinson (played by Geena Davis), until Louise shoots a barfly who attempts to assault Thelma. Thelma and Louise proceed to set off on a cross-country trip to escape the law.

During the course of the film, Louise gets engaged to her boyfriend, Jimmy (Michael Madsen), but there are moments in the second and third acts (as noted in the shooting script) where she seems to have fallen for the new Thelma that has emerged on their newfound crime spree. This is mostly expressed through looks and not through dialogue, but becomes clear when viewing the film through a queer lens.
