Bárbara Román is a bi character in the Chilean television series Perdona Nuestros Pecados (Spanish for Forgive our sins), played by María José Bello. Set in the conservative town of Villa Ruiseñor during the 1950s, the series follows the wealthy Möller family and the many scandals that unfold around them, including abusive marriages, murders, political corruption, and forbidden romances. At the center of the series is the romance between María Elsa and priest Reynaldo, but the series also portrays other relationships that challenge the rigid moral structures of the town. Bárbara’s story arc becomes one of the show’s notable examples of bi representation, as she is seen navigating her marriage to Samuel and her romantic relationship with Mechita.
When Bárbara was introduced in the first season, she works as a schoolteacher in Villa Ruiseñor and is married to Samuel Quiroga, María Elsa’s brother. Their marriage is unstable, as Samuel is controlling, insecure, and erratic, particularly as his family becomes entangled in various scandals throughout the series. Bárbara attempts to maintain the façade of a perfect and stable marriage, which reflects the social pressures placed on women in the town as well as in the 1950s. Divorce is still stigmatized, and women are expected to remain loyal wives despite their personal unhappiness.
Her storyline begins to change when she develops a close friendship with Mercedes “Mechita” Möller, María Elsa’s sister. Mechita is initially introduced as a rebel and resistant to the strict expectations imposed by her father, Armando Möller. As the two women spend more time together, their relationship grows and becomes more intimate. Their bond becomes stronger and turns romantic, with both Bárbara and Menchita revealing to each other their frustrations of having to lead lives they do not want.
In Episode 62, Bárbara and Mechita share their first kiss after several episodes of charged emotional tension. This marks a turning point in Bárbara’s arc, as it confirms that her feelings for Mechita extend beyond their friendship. Their relationship continues in secret, and in Episode 68, Bárbara and Mechita spend the night together, solidifying their relationship while also increasing the risk of being discovered. Because the town of Villa Ruiseñor is deeply conservative and still influenced by traditional Catholic values, their relationship carries serious consequences. Both women become aware that exposure could destroy their reputations and place them in danger.
Simultaneously, Bárbara remains tied to her marriage with Samuel. Their relationship deteriorates further as Samuel grows suspicious of her emotional distance. In various episodes through the latter half of the first season, he attempts to control her and demands that she fulfill her role as his wife.
In Episode 83, pressure from Samuel and the suspicion of the townspeople of Villa Ruiseñor cause Bárbara to distance herself from Mechita, devastating both women. Rather than ending the relationship, Bárbara withdraws and becomes distant.
Through the second half of the series, Bárbara continues to struggle between societal expectations and her personal desire. She repeatedly attempts to build a future with Mechita, while also having to deal with the fallout of her marriage.
One of the most notable aspects of Bárbara’s character is that the series never presents her attraction to women as a temporary phase. While the word “bisexual” is never explicitly used, her romantic history with Samuel and her sustained relationship with Mechita clearly establish her attraction to more than one gender. The show treats both relationships as significant rather than using one to invalidate the other.
By the end of Perdona nuestros pecados, Bárbara remains one of the show’s most memorable queer characters because her story and character arc are allowed to be messy, romantic, and deeply shaped by the realities of her environment.
